Reminder to VOTE GREEN TOMORROW (October 14th)

Hey Everyone,

Hope you are all enjoying your Thanksgiving dinner. I just wanted to send out one last message thanking you for all your support throughout this campaign. TOMORROW is the big day-- October 14th.

I'm relying on your vote to send a strong message to Ottawa that Windsor can no longer be ignored and the issues like the green-jobs; affordable, high-quality post-secondary education; the climate crisis; TRUE health care; and poverty MUST BE ADDRESSED.

The reason that the Liberal Party is talking about the Green Tax Shift, and the reason that the NDP is talking about "green collar jobs," is the rapid rise of the Green Party. It is only by voting for what we want that we will ever get it.

Albert Einstein said it best: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

So tomorrow, on October 14th. It is time to vote for change and for what WE want.

For students in the riding (or those who have no voter card): You can vote in this riding! All you need to do is bring a piece of government issued photo-id (drivers license or health card) and a bill that has your name and Windsor address on it (cable bill, utilities bill, etc. or residence attestation form from your RA). Go to: Elections Canada Website and enter your postal code to find out where you are supposed to vote. Bring your 2 pieces of ID and VOTE! Polls are opened tomorrow from 9:30am - 9:30pm.

Once again, THANK YOU all for your support! It has been an amazing campaign and hopefully tomorrow night our message will be sent loud and clear that Canada does NOT end in London, Canada STARTS in WINDSOR!

ps. We will all be meeting at The Honest Lawyer (300 Ouellette Ave) at 9:30pm to watch the results as they come in. So come on out and help celebrate this successful campaign. Hope to see you all there!

Summer Getaway to Guelph

With the recent announcement of the by-elections in the southern Ontario riding of Guelph and the Montreal-area ridings of Westmount-Ville Marie and St-Lambert, it was decided that Guelph will be the location for this year's getaway. It's a perfect chance to meet young greens from across the country, as well as get a taste for not only what campaign is all about, but also what being a Young Green is too!

The chosen weekend for the getaway is August 8-10th. Those interested in coming out for a fun weekend get together are encouraged to sign-up at: the Go to Guelph Young Greens Site.

Recycle Bins on Riverside Drive Petition Day

The Environmental Coalition is stepping up efforts to get the City of Windsor to install recycle bins alongside the Odette Sculpture Gardens.

On Saturday March 29th 2006, from 12-4ish we will be joining forces with members of the Windsor community to go door to door gathering signatures. Our goal is 5000 before Earth Day.

We will be meeting at the corner of Ouellette and Riverside at 12 Noon.

Movie Screening: "The Future of Food"

The Young Greens as part of an Environmental Coalition Initiative will be hosting a screening of "The Future of Food". According to Ironweedfilms.com:

With unprecedented clarity, Deborah Koons Garcia’s documentary, The Future of Food, distills the complex technology and key regulatory, legal, ethical, environmental and consumer issues surrounding the changes happening in the food system today -- genetically engineered foods, patenting, and the corporatization of food -- into terms the average person can easily understand. It empowers consumers to realize the consequences of their food choices on our future.

The event is set to take place Wednesday March 26th 2008, starting at 7pm. The screening will be held at Jimmy G's pub at the corner of Rankin and Wyandotte (really close to the University of Windsor).

There is NO Admission, and we encourage you all to bring a group a friends with you for a fun, informative night out.

OPIRG request for volunteers

Here is an event you all might be interested in. They are also asking for volunteers so if your available to volunteer just email the coordinator Danielle.

This January 26 & 27 OPIRG-Windsor is hosting the
Western Ontario Public Interest School at Vanier Hall, University of Windsor.
Full details will follow in the New Year together with registration
information.

This is a two day conference entitled "Conscious Change" which will feature
workshops on various social justice and environmental issues.
On Saturday,
January 26 the keynote speaker is Libby Davies, Member of Parliament for
Vancouver East, who will be speaking on "Harm Reduction" as a sensible policy as
opposed to the "war on drugs."

On Sunday, January 27 the keynote speaker is Howard Pawley, Adjunct
Professor of Political Science and Social Justice Person of the Year 2002-2003
at the University of Windsor. Pawley is the former Premier of Manitoba and will
be speaking on " Activism as a Way of Life."

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to help with a number of tasks
including promotion, logistics, cooking, registration and staffing on the
weekend itself. Volunteers will receive free registration.
We also need
people to provide billeting for members of other PIRGs (Waterloo, Guelph,
McMaster, etc.) who will be coming to the conference.

Come out and join the Environmental Coalition on the International Day for Climate Action

University of Windsor students are joining communities in over 77 countries, to coincide with the UN Climate Negotiations held in Indonesia. As they encourage Windsorites to join them on a march to let politicians and administrators know that it is time for change, students say, “We’ve had enough non-action on global warming”. They will meet at 12 noon, December 8^th across from the CBC Radio Building (825 Riverside Drive).

Demonstrators will walk down Riverside Drive and down sunset ave. Finally they will stop in front of the construction site for the new Medical Building to highlight the Talloires Declaration the University of Windsor signed over 10 years ago. As heads of state meet in Bali, Indonesia for the UN Climate Negotiations, Canadians will stand in solidarity with millions around the world to demand action on climate change.

Maude Barlow visits Windsor!

Maude Barlow is coming to Windsor on Monday, November 19, 2007 7:00 p.m. at the Caboto Club, 2175 Parent Avenue. She is on a book tour for her new book Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water.

Maude Barlow is a Canadian author and activist. She is the national chairperson of The Council of Canadians, a progressive citizens’ advocacy organization with members and chapters across

Canada

. She is also the co-founder of the Blue Planet Project, which works to stop commodification of the world’s water. She is also a director with the International Forum on Globalization, a San Francisco based research and education institution opposed to economic globalization; fellow with the Washington-based Institute for Policy Studies; a board member of Food and Water Watch, the national US organization fighting for corporate and government accountability as it relates to food, water, and fishing; and a founding member of the European-based World Future Council.

Bring Gramma Home Letter/E-mail Campaign

OTTAWA – The Young Greens Council recently called on their 25 campus clubs across the country to demonstrate their support for Donna Dillman by writing letters to the Premier of Ontario.
“Donna Dillman is an example to all young Canadians,” says Ben Rankin (External Relations for the Young Greens Council). “She is demonstrating extraordinary leadership and complete dedication to ensuring our future welfare. Quite simply, I wish we had more role models like Ms. Dillman.”
Donna Dillman has been on a hunger strike to halt uranium mining and exploration in Ontario since October 8. She has been camping outside the gate of the mining site north of Sharbot Lake on hwy 509.
“Ms. Dillman is bringing much needed attention to several important issues,” says Jared Giesbrecht (Organizing Chair of the Young Greens Council). “Not only is she showing the broader health and safety concerns related to production of nuclear power, but is revealing the fact that this proposed mine is in Algonquin territory and must not proceed without full consent from the Algonquin people.”
The Young Greens are calling on young people all across the country to join them in supporting Ms. Dillman by writing letters to Premier Dalton McGuinty.
“Ms. Dillman has been working for decades to bring attention to important issues,” says Mr. Giesbrecht. “The Young Greens are proud to be a part of this progressive party and eager to follow Grandma Dillman’s example. Like Elizabeth May, she works selflessly and tirelessly for the well-being of others—a true leader.”

I encourage you all to help with the cause. Write an email to Dalton McGuinty, to Sandra Pupatello, Dwight Duncan, Brian Masse, and Joe Comartin. Let them know how you feel about the dangers and health risks associated with nuclear energy. Call on them to put in place a moratorium on uranium mining and exploration in Ontario.

An EWB Wine and Cheese Invitation

Here is an invite that might be of interest to the group. I think I may be attending, so if anyone from the group is wanting to go just send me an email and we can try to get a table together.

Our willingness to work with other groups and attending their events helps to get the word out on what we are doing here on campus. It is also a great opportunity to support a good cause, perhaps we could even get some ideas for the dinner we would like to host next semester with Elizabeth May as our keynote speaker.

Engineers without Borders' third annual Wine and Cheese will be taking place Friday, Nov 23rd, 2007 at the Masonic Temple (Oullette and Erie). Doors open at 6:30 pm and the event starts at 7 pm. This is an excellent chance for you to enjoy some delicious food, sip on some wine (or non-alcoholic beverages) and listen to stories of creating positive change both in Canada and overseas. Tickets are 20 dollars for students and this includes two glasses of wine and some desserts, vegetables, and fruit. You can also purchase a table (8 tickets) for $150. By supporting this event you are helping [EWB] raise funds to send a volunteer overseas for four months. This volunteer will learn about the complexities of development. This knowledge will be brought back to Canada in a way to understand the connections between our actions in Canada to the impacts overseas.

Young Greens Clean-Up West Windsor

Our first clean-up of the semester is set to take place on Tuesday, November 13th 2007 from 4pm to 5ish. Our adopted street is Indian Avenue. We will be meeting at the corner of Indian Avenue and Wyandotte West (just west of the Ambassador Bridge). FREE Organic/ Fair-Trade hot chocolate will be served afterwards in the CAW BOARDROOM (second floor of Student Centre).

Our clean-up is registered with the Green Party of Ontario's Community Clean-up initiative. So if you aren't able to make it out SPONSOR US! E-May wins a dinner date with Layton

I had to share this article with you guys. Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada, has been trying to set-up a meeting with Jack Layton to talk about how they can work together to ensure that the left of centre parties don't allow for a Harper Majority in the next election (read: death of Kyoto and the Environment). Up until now Layton has ignored her numerous invitations.

Well, at the recent Press Gallery dinner Layton held an auction to raise funds for a scholarship at Carlton University for the late Dennis Bueckert, a respected environmental reporter for The Canadian Press. The Winner... Elizabeth May. Her guest? Mr. Dion (and her daughter of course). This is what is to like about the Green Party. Not a party of partisanship but rather co-operation. A party that sees past politics as usual, to produce something that works for Canadians.

If you haven't already checked it out. You must (in between studying of course). This is the Green Party's most detailed policy document to date. The Green Party of Canada website describes it:

facing Canadians. It was developed by a 31-member Green Shadow Cabinet and was
informed by experts, activists and citizens who participated in policy workshops held across
Canada. All the proposals are based on policies approved by the membership of the Green
Party.

Just a reminder. You DO NOT have to be a member of the Green Party of Canada or Green Party of Ontario to join our club (though we strongly encourage this). The only thing required is being ready to change the "climate" at the University of Windsor in regards to Green values.
